What makes a dashboard actually useful?

The design principles behind dashboards that support real business decisions.

Kibaru Consulting Inc. • Practical business insight

A dashboard is not automatically useful because it contains charts. Its purpose is to help someone understand performance and decide whether action is needed.

Start with the audience

An executive dashboard and an operational dashboard answer different questions. Define who will use it and what decisions they need to make.

Reduce noise

Prioritize a small number of important metrics. Visual hierarchy should make the most important information easy to find.

Make comparisons obvious

A number becomes more useful when the user can compare it with a target, prior period, benchmark or relevant segment.

Use consistent definitions

If different teams calculate the same KPI differently, a beautiful dashboard will not solve the underlying problem.

Design for action

When a metric changes, the user should be able to investigate the cause or identify the next step. Good dashboards are decision tools, not decoration.

Kibaru principle: If a dashboard cannot help its audience decide what to pay attention to, it probably needs simplification.
